Estimating the value of the estate
You have to estimate the value of the estate because of the inheritance tax.
Usually, there will be no inheritance tax if the estate is valued below £325,000 or if anything above this number is given away to a spouse, charity etc.
How do I estimate the value?
Inheritance tax - what is it and how to it impact probate?
Not paying inheritance tax?
The government provides a guide, which talks you through how to value, what the value and how to check the inheritance tax you may need to pay!
Inheritance tax is a 40% tax, it is applied after a person dies if the estate is worth over £325,000.
If you need to pay inheritance tax it will impact your probate application because HMRC will send you a letter that will include a code and you must use this code in your probate application.
If you know that you won’t be paying inheritance tax, this is called an ‘excepted estate’. You still need to estimate the value of the estate for your probate application, and you can find that guide on this page on the government website.
