IN THIS LESSON
You’ve finished the application, now what can you expect?
Firstly, well done! It’s hard to have to think about all the paperwork when you’re also dealing with family, grief and a massive life change. We hope you feel a little lighter now you’re finished.
The application is in, now what?
Now you just wait. As mentioned previously, different applications will take varying amounts of time. The duration depends on whether they require additional input from you. You can also track the progress on the government website!
The application was successful, what do I get?
Once your application has been reviewed and the process is complete you will either receive ‘the grant of probate’ or if there was no will it will be slightly different. If you applied without a will you will receive ‘letters of administration’.
And finally, if you applied and there was a will but now the executor named or the executor named did not apply, you will receive ‘letters of administration annexed’.
Now what do I do?
So all of the above basically allows you to start dealing with the person’s estate.
If you need access to the person’s bank you’re able to send these probate letters and gain access.
The government has a guide to dealing with someone’s estate here.
