What Is an Awe Walk?

Something gentle to add to your toolkit for the hard days.

You’ve probably heard of mindfulness  but have you heard of an awe walk?

You might even be taking them already without realising…

An awe walk is a simple practice: going for a walk and intentionally noticing the world around you.

No headphones, no agenda, just slowing down and taking in the small or surprising things. The light through the trees. A flower growing through concrete. A colour you love. A moment of stillness.

Why Awe Walks Can Help with Grief

Grief can leave us feeling disconnected, anxious, or overwhelmed, like our minds are racing and everything around us is a blur. On days like that, an awe walk can be a gentle way to return to your body and the present moment, even if just for ten minutes.

We often treat walking as a way to get from A to B, with podcasts in, emails open, or calls on the go. But an awe walk invites us to pause and notice.

Awe Walks and Memory

An awe walk can also be a beautiful way to remember your person.

You might walk in their favourite place, wander their garden, or simply notice things that remind you of them, a particular flower, a car they loved, a colour they wore.

Tips for Trying an Awe Walk

  •  Choose a colour to look for as you walk

  • Walk a familiar route and try to see it with new eyes

  • Notice something that makes you smile

  • Focus on light, the way it hits the pavement, shines through leaves

A Note to End

An awe walk isn’t a fix. We know grief can’t be solved or tidied up with a technique. But on the hard days, it might help you feel a little more here. It’s something gentle to keep in your back pocket when you need it.

If you'd like to share anything you notice, a photo, a feeling, a moment, we’d love to see it. You’re always welcome in our Online Community.
